Leading Marketing for Go Girl, Go for IT event
Introduction
Go Girl, Go for IT is more than just an event—it is a movement designed to inspire, educate, and empower young girls to explore careers in technology. As part of Vic ICT for Women, this initiative plays a critical role in breaking down barriers and fostering diversity in the tech industry.
In 2021, I had the privilege of leading the marketing function and full strategic marketing rollout for the event as part of the executive team, ensuring maximum engagement and innovation, particularly in the wake of the digital shift caused by COVID-19.
Marketing Leadership and Strategy
My role in Go Girl, Go for IT 2021 was to develop and execute a comprehensive marketing strategy that would expand reach, increase engagement, and modernize event delivery. This included:
Developing a Full-Scale Marketing Plan – Aligning branding, messaging, and digital strategy to drive participation.
Overseeing Digital Campaigns – Executing a multi-channel marketing approach across social media, email campaigns, and partnerships.
Driving Content Creation – Crafting compelling narratives to inspire young girls and promote success stories from women in tech.
Enhancing Stakeholder Engagement – Collaborating with sponsors, educators, and industry leaders to amplify event visibility.
Innovating with a Digital-First Approach
With the pandemic pushing us to rethink traditional event formats, we introduced an innovative online version of Go Girl, Go for IT to ensure accessibility and engagement in a virtual environment. This involved:
Redesigning the Event Experience for Virtual Platforms – Implementing interactive Zoom rooms, live Q&A sessions, and breakout discussions tailored to different age groups.
Leveraging New Technology for Engagement – Introducing virtual panels, industry-led workshops, and live mentoring sessions.
Creating an On-Demand Content Hub – Allowing continued access to insights, career advice, and inspirational talks from leading women in tech.
Go Girl Cyber Edition 2021 – Successfully launched an online event with over 650 school girls registered, connecting them with mentors and role models in tech.
Ensuring Accessibility – Maintaining an ethos of #AnyGirlForIT, ensuring no participant was charged to attend and that financial barriers did not prevent access to STEM education.
Impact and Outcomes
Through a strong marketing push and a commitment to innovation, Go Girl, Go for IT 2022 successfully reached thousands of young girls, helping them envision a future in STEM. Key achievements included:
Expanded Reach – A record number of students engaged in both in-person and virtual sessions.
Industry-Wide Support – Increased sponsorship and corporate partnerships from tech giants and educational institutions.
High Engagement Levels – Meaningful interactions between attendees and industry role models, sparking interest in STEM careers.
Volunteer Engagement – Over 150 volunteers dedicated their time on event day, with 60+ contributing throughout the year to make the event a success.
